50 Years of Swimming History

Toa Payoh Swimming Complex opened on 24 September 1973 for the 7th Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games, where Singapore's swimmers claimed 23 gold medals. It was one of Singapore's first purpose-built swimming complexes, featuring a 50-metre competition pool with 8 lanes, a training pool, teaching pool, wading pool, and a diving pool with 10-metre platforms. The 1,100-seat spectator gallery made it the country's premier aquatic venue.

Over five decades, the complex hosted some of the biggest events in Singapore's sporting history: the 12th SEA Games (1983), 17th SEA Games (1993), Asian Swimming Championships (2006), Asian Youth Games (2009), and the diving events of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. It served as the headquarters of the Singapore Swimming Association and was the training ground for generations of national swimmers.

Toa Payoh Swimming Complex closed on 31 October 2023 after 50 years of service. The site is being demolished to make way for the Toa Payoh Integrated Development (TPID), expected to open around 2030. The new TPID will feature a 2,000-seater aquatic centre with 4 indoor pools and 3 outdoor leisure pools, a 5,000-seater indoor hall, gym, polyclinic, library, and a town park.
